What semi-absentee really means

It's the most chosen involvement level in the survey and the most misunderstood. What brands mean by it, and what it asks of you in the first year.

By the Franchise Outfit team · Sep 14 · 2 minute read

More buyers pick semi-absentee than any other involvement level. Most of them mean "I would like to keep my job and own a business on the side". Brands mean something more specific, and the gap between the two causes trouble.

What a brand means

A semi-absentee model is one where the owner leads and a manager runs the day. The owner hires the manager, watches the numbers, handles the landlord and the bank, and is on site a set number of hours a week. The brand's training and systems assume that structure. It is a real job, part time, with real consequences when it is skipped.

What the first year asks of you

Every owner is an owner-operator during opening. You are choosing a site, signing a lease, hiring a team, learning the systems and opening the doors. Managers who can be handed a finished business are hired later, and often only after the owner has run it long enough to know what good looks like. Plan your first year as if you will be in the business most days, because you will.

The manager is the whole model

A semi-absentee business is only as good as the person running the day. Finding, paying and keeping that person is the owner's central job. Brands that do this model well have a system for it. Ask on validation calls how long owners took to find a manager they could rely on, and what they pay them.

Absentee is different again

Absentee means you own it and check in. Few brands offer it honestly, and the ones that do tend to be simple operations with strong central systems. If a brand calls itself absentee and its owners tell you they work thirty hours a week, believe the owners.

Pick the level you can live with in year one

Your Match score treats involvement as a hard factor, because brands do. If you can give the business two days a week this year and want it to run itself in three years, pick semi-absentee and say so on the call. If you cannot give it two days a week, we should talk about whether now is the time.

Why the intro call comes before the matches

Buyers ask why they can't see their matches the moment the survey ends. The answer is that a score without a conversation sends people to the wrong brands.

The franchisor is deciding about you as much as you are deciding about them. Three things to know about yourself before the introduction, so the call goes somewhere.
