How franchise ownership works: the four steps

From the match survey to the day you sign, the same four steps in the same order. What happens in each one, who does what, and how long it tends to take.

Updated Sep 26 · 2 minute read

Buying a franchise can feel overwhelming: a lot of paperwork, a lot of people, and a six-figure decision at the end of it. It's easier when you can see the whole process before you start. Franchise Outfit runs every buyer through the same four steps, and your portal shows you which step you are on and what's left in it at all times.

1. Fit

Complete the match survey. What you want ownership to give you, your work background, what you can invest, how involved you want to be, which industries interest you, where you want to open and when. It takes about eight minutes, and your account is created at the end. Your answers become your buyer profile, and every Match score you see is built from them, so honest answers get you useful matches.

Hold your intro call. A short call with your coach. They read your survey before it, ask what the answers did not cover, and tell you plainly whether a franchise makes sense for your situation. Nothing is sold on this call. If your coach thinks you should wait, they say so.

2. Shortlist

Review your coach's matches. The catalog is scored against your profile. Your coach reviews the top candidates and publishes a curated set to your matches with a note on each brand. You save the ones you like and compare them side by side.

Tell your coach which ones make your shortlist. Your answers tell them where to set up calls.

3. Evaluation

For each brand on your shortlist, everything shows up in your portal:

  • Receive and read the FDD. The brand's Franchise Disclosure Document is released to your document room, with your coach's flags beside it.

  • Meet the franchisor. Your coach introduces you and sets up the call.

  • Speak with current owners. Validation calls, the most honest hour of the process.

  • Request your territory. The brand sees your area, never your contact details, and answers Available or Unavailable.

  • Arrange financing and advisors. Your coach introduces you to funding, legal and accounting partners we have worked with, and you choose whether to use them. Nothing about your matches changes based on which partner you pick.

Your coach coordinates all of it and logs every step to your deal.

4. Signing

Attend Discovery Day. You visit the brand's headquarters, meet the team who will support you, and both sides decide whether this is a fit.

Receive the offer. The brand offers you the franchise.

Sign the franchise agreement. Review it with your lawyer first. Your coach records the placement, and stays with you through training and opening.

What it costs you

Free to start. There's no charge for the survey, your Match scores, or your coach's time on your intro call and your matches. What it costs you has the rest.

How long it takes

It depends on you, the brand and your financing. Buyers who already know their budget and territory can move from survey to signing in a few months. Buyers who are still deciding whether to own anything at all often take longer, and that is fine. You can stop at any step.
